| | STARS is an 18 month project which aims at mobilizing transport research into speed management to demonstrate how excessive and inappropriate speed can be reduced through existing measures.
The main objective of STARS is to run concrete actions that can reduce speed through the work of students. STARS relies on the work of committed young university students who will be encouraged to run a local speed management action to reduce speeding through infrastructure projects or communication projects in road transport with the support of ETSC and its partners.
The Hellenic Institute of Transport, being a pioneer in research and educational activities in transport issues and willing to raise awareness on road safety strongly supports such efforts. Anastasios Koutoulas and Konstantinos Papoutsis being nominated as transport engineers and having graduated the Master Program Planning, Organization and Management of Transport Systems in which HIT/CERTH is involved, represented Thessaloniki city in the above contest. HIT/CERTH is the main contributor in the speed management project which was implemented by the two students.
The project relied on the implementation of rumble strips and horizontal marking by warning the drivers of the existence of the bus stop close to a High School.
The above speed management measures will conduct high level of road safety in the area and achieve reduction of speeding.
Furthermore, the low-cost installation and the innovative mood of project idea ensure economic sustainability with almost zero environmental impacts while reaching our main goal which is speed adjustment.

| | Road Safety has been a “front page” issue for over a decade now in Europe, drawing wide policy making and research interest especially after the 2001 EU white paper on Transport Policy. In this past decade road accidents in EU countries have been considerably reduced but the goal of halving them or even eliminating them (zero vision) is still far from being achieved. There is still a lot to be done in terms of policy making, public awareness raising, and so many other possible actions, so the sharing of successful knowledge and experiences at this point in time, when the decade turns and the new EU white paper on Transport Policy is expected, is of particular importance.
The Hellenic Institute of Transport and the Forum of the European Road Safety Research Institutes organised a two-day Event on European Road Safety with special focus on best practices and successful policies towards the reduction of road fatalities and the creation of a strong pan-European alliance for safer roads.
The main aim was the promotion of road safety by exchanging views and experiences between all relevant stakeholders on success stories and the most promising policies and action plans. Besides its wider European interest and importance, this event was also very important for Greece where the Ministry of Infrastructure Transport and Networks – who is sponsoring this event – is undertaking a series of major initiatives in order to promote road safety and improve the road safety record of the country.
The event comprised a Conference with invited speakers from major European stakeholders, and a parallel exhibition of successful road safety campaigns implemented in European countries.
